There are several expressions used to refer to the expected effect of the work with the youth in conflict with the law when socio-educational measures have been used. These measures are part of the State legal apparatus since the Child and Adolescent Statute (Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente) has been promulgated and they represent responsibility assumed face to the transgression committed. However, how different are those so called socio-educational measures from the traditional penalty pay? Some aspects involved in this issue are physical structure, formation of human resources, educational activities and interdisciplinary work. The aim of this article is to discuss the socio-educational features of the measures of deprivation of freedom and the possibilities of social re-insertion of the youth in conflict with the law.
