Abstract

During a technical visit to the Municipal Hospital of Ji-Paraná, a group of nursing students, under the supervision of a professor, participated in a hands-on learning experience essential to their training. Upon arrival, they were welcomed by on-duty nurses and taken to a room where they received guidelines on hospital conduct, proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), patient confidentiality, and the planned activities. The students then analyzed the medical records of patients admitted to the surgical clinic, collecting relevant data such as diagnoses, clinical progress, prescribed medications, and wound care. Each student was then assigned to a ward where, with the patients’ consent, they conducted a full anamnesis and physical examination using techniques such as inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation, in addition to checking vital signs. As they were unable to directly inspect the dressings, the activity highlighted the importance of active listening, keen observation, and gathering information from medical records and nursing staff. Throughout the visit, the students were guided by the professor, who provided support, answered questions, and ensured ethical and safe practices. Interaction with the nurses responsible for the patients proved enriching, offering broader insights into daily care, patient responses to interventions, and the significance of teamwork. At the end of the visit, the group returned to the initial meeting room, where they received constructive feedback from the professor, shared their experiences, and presented the clinical cases, contributing to collective learning. One challenge faced was the noise and movement caused by a maintenance team, which required extra focus and adaptability from the students to maintain a respectful and effective approach. Finally, all students handed over the collected information to the on-duty nursing staff, ensuring continuity of care and reinforcing the importance of accurate documentation in patient records.
