Abstract

Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (CNCDs), such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus, currently represent one of the greatest public health challenges, especially in Brazil, where the epidemiological transition has contributed significantly to the increase in the incidence of these conditions (BRASIL, 2021). These diseases have a direct impact on the population's quality of life and place a huge burden on health systems, requiring integrated approaches involving education, prevention, treatment and ongoing monitoring. In this context, the aim of this report is to describe an interdisciplinary outreach activity developed by students and a lecturer from the Medicine course in a religious community in the municipality of Ji-Paraná, in the state of Rondônia. The activity was organized with the aim of raising awareness and strengthening self-care in order to avoid complications from NCDs. The actions involved distributing educational folders on CNCDs, measuring blood pressure, calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as practical guidance on eating a balanced diet, practicing regular physical activity, stopping smoking and correctly adhering to drug treatment. At the same time, active listening was carried out with the participants, allowing the guidance to be personalized and promoting a welcoming and participatory environment. This experience favored the sharing of knowledge between academics and the local population, strengthening the bond between the university and the community served. The results show the transformative role of university extension, which integrates teaching, research and social responsibility, contributing to the training of ethical, empathetic professionals who are committed to improving society's health conditions.
